Here's a lovely mix I put together with nothing but today's modern disco. Last year I put together the same style and concept of this mix. This is volume 2 of the series. People get confused with the Retrovox alias I have. This mix is all about that alias. More of the italo-disco, synth , melodic 80's movie score kind of feel. I've only shared this mix with about 3-4 people. My buddy said its the best mix I've put out yet. Now that Christmas is here. This is my present from me to you :)

Here's a mix I ran into the other day on twitter. Dj Flux puts a nice blend of deep house in the beginning of the mix and slowly picks it up to some house groovers. Flux hails from Alamo, Tx I believe. Everytime I hear him dj he never dissapoints. I always expect something different from him which is a good thing in my books. Not many dj's here play good house music anymore or maybe I'm just not looking haha! Well my favorite tunes on the mix is 'disrupted' and the last tune 'sing with the swing'. Tune in and enjoy!

Here's a mix that I did for one of my good buddies Abraham Garza. He is a dj/producer and label owner of Cromarti Records. Abraham is based out of Austin,Tx. He asked me last minute to make a mix for his online radio show on http://www.pure.fm/ I believe the mix will be airing at 5pm. You can always check the website for the schedule. On late notice for this mix I already knew what Abraham wanted. More of the deep,melodic sounds. His label is one to watch in the future. This is the annual Thunderdome where djs compete for money (I think). The way the djs win or to move on to the final is by crowd response. So if you have the most friends or just a popular dude...then you will win this event pretty much. It shows that I'm on the tag team section with Fat Yank from Austin. But he could not come down for this event.
So now I'm on the singles at Pure. I usually try to play different from everyone else at this kind of event since most of the djs play the same genre. I will try not to bore anyone haha!
That being said if you are reading this I would appreciate some support... or just come by and enjoy some tunes and beers!

You can download this mix by click the little arrow under Info. This is a mix I did for Sista Stroke from the interview I did with her. It's more on the real housey feel. New York deep house influence. I threw in one of my edits of Norm Talley - The Journey, that has been supported by well known dj/producer Argy (Cocoon, Poker Flat, Objektivity). He had emailed me a few weeks ago saying he dropped it at world famous Berghain club at Panorama Bar in the upstairs area. The club is located in Berlin. He told me the track worked very well and it was insane when he played it. Also I put an orignal tune of mine called 'Exhale' towards the end of the mix.

Here's a mix of my good buddy Samuel Nova. Short mix but it will get you in the spirit to party. Well...it did for me. He throws in electro and some groovey bouncy house. That's what I like about his mixes, plays almost everything and doesnt care what everyone thinks.
As for tonight...I'll be djing at Roosevelt's on Main st. in McAllen outside in the patio with other fellow local djs. It usually starts early at 7-8pm and gets slammed with people for the Art Walk. So come by for some good tunes, nice weather and some brews.

Traktor Kontrol - X1

I was on twitter earlier today and I saw my friend post the link to this midi controller. When I first saw a Richie Hawtin video using this, I thought this toy was a little too bulky and big to travel with. But it isn't, thank god! I've been thinking of buying a midi controller like this one. I was looking into buying the FaderFox. This video below makes it so simple to use, just 'plug and play'. I'm one of those that doesn't like to mess with settings and installing drivers wrong. This would be so useful if there's no cdj's/decks around at a club/house party....anywhere really. I would still use my turntables off of Traktor for sure and I love playing with vinyl, but turntables are not going be everywhere I dj at. The price isn't that bad at all compared to others I've seen around. Its gonna run about $229. It doesnt get released till February 10, 2010

Alright. For those who don't know yet, I've been promoting this Fridays show for the past 2 weeks or so, if you haven't noticed on myspace,facebook...ect. It gets annoying sometimes I know but atleast I'm not like every other promoter that makes bulletins every minute.
Chris Fortier hails from Brooklyn, New York. He's a very well known and accomplished house dj/producer. He also co-owns the well known compilation Balance cd's. Fortier is known for his underground sounds which is usually dark groovey house. The warmup and after sets will be me (rey) Jay Sunwalker and Dj Zoil.
For those asking what 'petfood' is next to my name, it's my new home record label I'm with based out of LA and Miami. That animal is the logo....cute lil fella eh?
If you see me at this event very drunk or having myself a great time....just feed off of it. I try to make the best of it from my dj sets because I NEVER dj. So come by,I'll get you a drink and be ready to dance.

Jay Sunwalker - Hey! Mango Mango (dj mix)

Here's a mix my buddy Jay Sunwalker sent me. Always come correct with his mixes. This mix is a special one. He decided to do a mix that brought him back to Mango's. Mango's was a bar/club located in Edinburg where me and partner Fern used to be resident djs at about 2-3 yrs ago. I remember the venue being open til 7am at times....also 12-1pm if people still wanted to jam. Mango's was known for the after-hours and most important, music! Mango's was my home away from home. And this mix has most of the anthems when the bar was still alive.Listen to this mix and experience Mango's one more time. RIP Mango's!!

Lazaro Casanova at Club Element Tomorrow Night

Takeoverrgv.com brings Lazaro Casanova to club Element. Lazaro from Miami has been on tour with MSTRKRFT and Juan Maclean a few years ago. I first saw Casanova about 2 years at sxsw in Austin when he was part of the MSTRKRFT fam. He played more of an electro house set and was a good set he did. Not too long ago Laz has changed his sound to more of a tech house, housey feel. A lot of drums, percussion and live sounds. Lately he has done remix work for Juan Maclean, Nic Fanciulli and Oscar G. His productions keeps getting better everytime I take a listen to his new tracks. This young and rising dj is a must see. The local talent for tomorrow night is Rey Aguilar (me), Jay Sunwalker and Julio Lacayo.

Tonight Nic Fanciulli (Buick Project, Skylark) head label of Saved records will be djing at Shine Martini Lounge. Nic is by far one of my top dj/producers in the house game. About 4 years ago when he was rising under Pete Tong's name, Fanciulli influenced me on playing some electro in my sets. I saw Nic when he first came to Reynosa & McAllen, they were both awesome nights. If you're into deep/tech house I recommend you checking him out tonight. 1st Interview with Mr. Wonk

Here's the first installment of my interviews from local dj/producers to the most well known around the globe.

R: How long have you been producing?
W:Ive been producing for about 3 years already, I began right about this time of the year 3 years ago. Time has gone by fast! Its been one fucked up confusing but great journey!


R: Why do you call your green macbook 'geanie'?
W:It all began as an inside joke with a couple of my homeboys, Geanie is actually the name of a little Chihuahua dog shes quite a diva.


R: I see you remixed Deadmau5. How did you react when you got a chance remix the great mau5?
W:I was very thankful and excited! Deadmau5 has become one of the biggest acts in Electronic Music Im glad I was given the opportunity to remix him, not just once but twice! Just finished remixing his track "Attention Whore" and I was also asked to remix "Dr. Funkenstein" I'll be starting on that one soon.


R: Who is your biggest influence in electronic music?
W:Ive got a handful of producers and djs that are a big influence, but I guess Armand Van Helden would be it. Hes just so fresh and innovative hes always doing his own thing and its been working for years. And obviously Daft Punk as well!


R:Your Wonky Sessions have doing great with awesome djs. Who else is coming up on the list?
W: I've not really kept up with Wonky Sessions the past couple of months but I should get back on it soon. There are some great djs coming up like Bass Weazal, Marius Modal, Rey Aguilar, A1 Bassline, Kelevra and some others.


R: Your first gig in McAllen, Texas next week at club Element. How do you feel about it?
W:This party is going to be insane! Im all about hyped up edgy shows and this is exactly what party will be like. The promoter is putting in a lot of effort and creativity on everything from promotion to decoration. I will be debuting my Mr. Micro Wonk project so were starting off deep and building it up to my main alias.


R: I've seen you've travelled to Los Angeles, New York and Denver. Which city was your favorite to dj at?
W:My favorite city has been Los Angeles, the scene their is huge and people really know how to party, I was there the whole weekend so I got to do a bit of sight seeing and relaxing instead of flying in playing and flying out.

R: What are your future projects? What new releases are coming up next?
W:I had been somewhat hesitant to put out my own original singles and eps, I first wanted to get some big remixes under my belt so now that its all coming together I'm finally ready to bust out tons of original material. Ive got a project I'll be working on with my homeboy Marius Modal, also doing a lot of collaborations with Melleefresh, and more remixes!


R: I see you use a different setup then most dj's around. Describe what equipment you have and what you do into your sets.
W:Yes I'm not much of a dj I'm more of a producer and will always be a producer but I still wanted to play out and found a way that suited me. I use a Macbook Pro running Ableton Live and my main controller is an Allen & Heath Xone 4d Ive also got a tiny midi controller I cant remember the name of it its by M-Audio. What I do depends on the track I usually have 10 channels set up with two channels reserved strictly for tracks and then Ive got different cue points on each track and various layers, loops and synths that go along with each track. Like I said each track is different and its not always set up like this on each track.

R: Mr Wonk, thank you for this interview. A lot of us can't wait to see/party with you. Any last words?
